SOLAR PANEL INSTALLATION IN BARRIE & SIMCOE COUNTY
Sparks Electrical Contracting designs and installs solar for homes across Barrie and Simcoe County. Every system is led by Master Electrician Aidan Brown (ECRA/ESA 7015728), and our own licensed team does the electrical work, the ESA permit and the utility connection.
That means the hard part of solar, getting your panel, meter and utility connection right, is handled by the same electricians who install your system. We can pair it with a Tesla Powerwall 3 battery, and as a registered HRSP contractor we'll help you choose between Ontario's rebate and net metering, then file the paperwork.

SOLAR SYSTEMS WE INSTALL
Rooftop solar for homes
Solar panels on your roof, sized to your home's use and your rebate or net-metering choice.
Flat roofs, shops and outbuildings
Flat roofs can take ballasted racking: weighted frames that sit on the roof and tilt the panels toward the sun. A detached shop or garage can also carry panels if its roof and electrical feed are suitable.
Solar + Tesla Powerwall 3
Powerwall 3 has a solar inverter built in (6 solar inputs, up to 20 kW DC), so one unit handles both storage and solar conversion. See Tesla Powerwall 3 installation.
Certified equipment
Every panel, inverter and battery we install is certified for use in Canada, as the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires. Your quote lists the exact equipment and its manufacturer warranties.

ONTARIO SOLAR REBATES IN 2026
Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program (HRSP) pays up to $5,000 for solar and up to $5,000 more for a battery installed with it, for a combined maximum of $10,000.
Solar rebate
$1,000 per kW DC, up to 50% of the cost, to a maximum of $5,000.
Battery rebate (with new solar only)
$300 per kWh, up to 50% of the cost, to a maximum of $5,000. Example: one Powerwall 3 (13.5 kWh) = $4,050.
The rules that catch people out
✓ Load displacement only: a rebated system can't be on net metering
✓ Written pre-approval before anything is bought or installed
✓ First-time systems only
✓ Owner-occupied, eligible home types
✓ Not available to Cornwall Electric customers
Sparks is a registered HRSP contractor, so we file the pre-approval and the rebate paperwork for you. The federal Canada Greener Homes grant and loan are closed. For businesses, the federal Clean Technology Investment Tax Credit (up to 30%, refundable) covers solar equipment.

HRSP REBATE OR NET METERING: WHICH SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
You have to pick one. A system that takes the HRSP rebate must be load displacement, so it can't sign a net-metering agreement.
Net metering
Solar you don't use flows to the grid and is credited on your hydro bill. Credits carry forward for up to 12 months, then reset to $0, and there are no cash payouts. Leases and power purchase agreements have been allowed since July 2022.
HRSP rebate (load displacement)
You get money back on the upfront cost, but nothing for power you export. The system is sized to your own use and is usually paired with a battery that stores the extra solar.
General guidance
✓ Large roof with lots of daytime export: net metering usually wins.
✓ Evening-heavy use on Ultra-Low Overnight, a smaller roof, or you want backup power: HRSP + a battery can win.
From November 1, 2026, Ontario Energy Board Ultra-Low Overnight prices are 3.7¢/kWh overnight (11 pm–7 am) and 37.7¢/kWh on weekdays from 4–9 pm, a gap a battery can work with. Compare both options against your last 12 months of bills before you decide, and we'll go through them with you at the site visit.

PAIRING SOLAR WITH A TESLA POWERWALL 3
A battery turns solar into backup power. When the grid goes down, Powerwall 3 keeps your home running and recharges from your panels during the day.
✓ Backup for outages, recharged by your own solar
✓ Shift solar and 3.7¢ overnight power into the 37.7¢ weekday 4–9 pm window
✓ One unit is both the battery and the solar inverter
✓ The Ontario battery rebate ($300/kWh, up to $5,000) only applies with new solar
Savings depend on how and when you use power, so we won't promise a number. Learn more about Tesla Powerwall 3 installation or our other battery backup options. Driving electric? You can also charge your EV from solar.
HOW MUCH DOES SOLAR COST IN BARRIE?
Every roof and electrical system is different, so you get a firm, written price after a free site visit. What affects the price:
✓ Roof type (pitched or flat)
✓ System size and your rebate or net-metering choice
✓ Whether your panel or service needs an upgrade
✓ Distance from the array to your panel and meter
✓ Adding a battery
SOLAR IN A SIMCOE COUNTY WINTER
Solar still works here in winter, but days are shorter and snow can cover the panels for a while, so winter production is lower than summer. The cold itself isn't the problem: panels produce a higher voltage when it's cold. That's why the system is designed for the coldest expected temperatures, so its voltage stays within the equipment's limits on the coldest mornings, as the Electrical Code requires.
IS YOUR HOME READY FOR SOLAR?
We check four things on every site visit:
✓ Roof age and condition: panels stay up for decades, so the roof under them should be in good shape first.
✓ Orientation and shading: how much sun the roof gets through the day and the year.
✓ Panel and service capacity: solar connects into your electrical system, and some panels need work first. We do panel and service upgrades for solar ourselves. Get a service upgrade quote.
✓ Meter and disconnect location: the utility requires a lockable disconnect near the meter, so we plan where it goes.

SOLAR FAQ
Who installs solar panels in Barrie, Ontario?
Sparks Electrical Contracting is a licensed electrical contractor in Barrie (ECRA/ESA 7015728), led by Master Electrician Aidan Brown. It designs and installs solar systems for homes across Simcoe County, including Innisfil, Bradford, Orillia, Oro-Medonte, Springwater, Collingwood, Wasaga Beach and Midland. Sparks does the electrical work, the ESA permit and the utility connection, and can pair solar with a Tesla Powerwall 3 battery. For a free quote, call 705-333-9869 or visit sparksec.ca/solarquote.
How much is the Ontario solar rebate in 2026?
Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program pays $1,000 per kW of solar, up to 50% of the cost and a maximum of $5,000. A battery installed with the new solar adds $300 per kWh, up to 50% and $5,000, for a combined maximum of $10,000. The system must be load displacement, which means no net metering, and written pre-approval is needed before anything is bought or installed. Sparks is a registered HRSP contractor and files the paperwork. The federal Canada Greener Homes grant and loan are closed.
Should I take the Ontario solar rebate or net metering?
You have to choose one, because a system that takes the Home Renovation Savings rebate can't sign a net-metering agreement. Net metering credits your exported solar on your hydro bill (credits expire after 12 months, with no cash payouts), so it usually suits larger roofs that export a lot during the day. The rebate lowers your upfront cost but pays nothing for exports. It tends to suit smaller systems paired with a battery in homes that use most of their power in the evening, especially on Ontario's Ultra-Low Overnight plan (3.7¢ overnight vs 37.7¢ weekdays 4–9 pm from November 1, 2026). Compare both against 12 months of your bills.
Do I need a battery with solar?
No, but it helps. Without a battery, a standard grid-tied solar system shuts off during a power outage for safety. A Tesla Powerwall 3 keeps your home running in an outage, stores daytime solar for the evening, and doubles as your solar inverter. With the HRSP rebate, a battery installed with your new solar also earns up to $5,000 more.
How much do solar panels cost in Barrie?
Every roof and electrical system is different, so Sparks gives you a firm, written price after a free site visit. The price depends on system size, roof type, whether your panel or service needs an upgrade, wire runs, and whether you add a battery.
Will solar work in a Simcoe County winter?
Yes. Short days and snow cover lower winter production, but cold weather doesn't harm the panels, and they produce a higher voltage in the cold. Systems are designed for the coldest expected temperatures so their voltage stays within equipment limits.
Do I need a panel or service upgrade for solar?
Sometimes. Solar connects into your electrical system, and your panel and service must be able to take it under the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. Sparks checks your panel, service size and meter at the site visit. If an upgrade is needed, we do it ourselves, so there's no second contractor to coordinate.
What permits and approvals does solar need?
Every system needs an ESA notification (permit) and an ESA inspection, plus a connection application with your utility. With Hydro One, systems up to 10 kW use Form C and larger systems use Form B, and the utility requires a lockable disconnect near the meter. Sparks handles all of it. Timing depends mostly on the ESA and utility steps.
What warranties come with a solar system?
Sparks backs every solar installation with a 10-year workmanship warranty. Tesla Powerwall 3 has a 10-year Tesla limited warranty, and solar panels and other equipment carry their manufacturer's product and power warranties. Your quote lists the exact terms.
